Cerro del Muerto is a mountain complex that is part of the Sierra del Laurel, a part of the Sierra Madre Occidental.

It is located in the municipality of Jesús María, at 2,440 meters above sea level.

It is surrounded by holm oaks, thorny and subtropical scrub, as well as a great variety of fauna and in 2008 it was declared a protected natural area.

Today it is an area for hiking, climbing, camping, rappelling and rock climbing.

Legend has it that many years ago, the Chichimecas, Chalcas and Nahuatlacas lived together with three extremely tall, majestic and imposing-looking priests.

One day, one of the priests went to bathe in a pool of hot water and when he jumped into the water, he disappeared. Those who accompanied the priest, desperate for his disappearance, believed it was the fault of the Chalcas and started a war.

The priest appeared in the middle of the war, but while trying to stop him he was hit by an arrow to the heart. While trying to escape, he left his blood on the road and the earth was painted with its color.

He fell lifeless, buried the entire Chichimeca people with his body, forming the Cerro del Muerto. It is said that the people still hide in its entrails.

The hill of the dead man makes analogy to a dead person with the feet at the beginning of the tour (El Picacho) to pass to the second and third antennas that would be the legs, then the Hands where you have a wonderful view, the Belly, the Chest, and finally the Nose and the Plume.

It has an extension of 3,800 hectares and there is a prominence formed by the El Picacho hill with 2,420 meters above sea level and the El Cabrito hill that together form the Del Muerto hill.

From the top there is a breathtaking view of the valley, especially at sunset.
