Frequently Asked Questions FAQ

San José de Gracia is one of the four Magical Towns treasured by the state of Aguascalientes, a municipality that has established itself as an interesting destination for nature, religious and sports tourism. We recommend you:

  • Make the hanging bridges circuit in Boca del Túnel.
  • Experience the devotion of the pilgrims on their way to Cristo Roto.
  • Sleep in the cabins overlooking the canyon of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de las Aguas Calientes.

The sanctuary of the Broken Christ is one of the iconic monuments of Aguascalientes and one of the largest sculptures in Mexico, with an approximate height of 27 meters.

For the inhabitants of the municipality, the work has an important symbolism as it represents a source of hope and personifies their strong religious beliefs.

The mutilated Christ represents the mutilation of the people who had to flee the place when the dam was raised. The work is dedicated to the hopeless.

Among the great treasures of San José are its festivals and traditions:

  • January 6 is a religious celebration dedicated to corn as the basis of food and a product of the region, a celebration that has been held since 1915.
  • The entire town preserves the custom of going to bathe in the Calles dam on June 24, the day of San Juan, as they consider the water to be blessed on that day.
  • On December 8, the patronal feast day of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated.

Erasmo Aguilar and Miguel Romo Santino decided to make a sculpture of the Broken Christ.

The work was inaugurated in 2006 and was completed in two months with a team of more than 300 workers.

The spirit of the artists was a tribute to remember all the hardships that this town suffered since its constitution in the 17th century.

The structure measures 28 meters and the island is also home to a sanctuary.

Those who do religious tourism in Aguascalientes will be able to appreciate there scale replicas of the images of all the Christs of the temples of the State.

They are arranged in niches at the base of the sculpture.

Today, the Cristo Roto is still considered the savior of lost causes, and is a popular stop for many Mexican citizens crossing illegally into the United States.

It is also visited to obtain healing from illnesses. In this place the pilgrim reaches the contact with Christ through prayer, here you will find the most powerful and effective prayers to Christ.

For those who are not particularly interested in the religiosity of the site, the dam and the island are worth visiting for their incredible views of the semi-arid landscape of central Mexico.

Boca de Túnel Adventure Park

Boca de Túnel Park in Aguascalientes is a place for adventure and amazement.

Crossing high cliffs on suspension bridges, flying on a zip line and admiring natural canyon landscapes: this is what a visit to this place is like.

The canyon system here is little known and tourism development is recent, but it is a work of art that nature has taken millions of years to sculpt.

The result is the curious landscapes, which resemble those of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, although, in any case, in miniature version!
